Station Narva festival reveals Roni Size, Mouse on Mars and Iceage as headliners

The music and city culture festival Station Narva is returning for its third consecutive year to the easternmost Estonian city Narva on 26 and 27 August. The British drum’n’bass legend Roni Size, the German electronic music innovators Mouse on Mars, and the Danish punk rock band Iceage are revealed as the headliners of the 2020 edition.

Station Narva 2020 festival passes are available for 20 euros (25 euros later) at Piletilevi.

The festival’s music programme will be set on three stages on the river bank at the Port of Narva on 26 August. Already familiar from the past festivals are the cosy and bohemian Art Club Ro-Ro and the boathouse in the premises of the historic cotton factory. For the first time, the live gigs will also happen outdoors, where the headliners Roni Size, Mouse on Mars and Iceage will take the stage.

Bristol legend Roni Size has spent over 20 years mashing together different sounds, bending them in new directions and taking them to the masses. His breakthrough came in 1997 when his album New Forms – made with his collective Reprazent – won the Mercury Prize and brought drum’n’bass from the underground to the biggest arenas. Thereafter Roni and team were on top of the world, maintaining underground credibility yet collaborating with some of the biggest names in hip-hop and pop. His most recent collaboration single with Rag’n’Bone Man was selected last year’s “Sound of Summer” by Sky Sports. On 28 August Roni Size will also give a talk and masterclass at the Tallinn Music Week’s Creative Impact conference.

Formed in 1993, Mouse on Mars is recognised as one of Germany’s most defining and versatile electronic music projects. With their anarchic mixture that oscillates between uncontrollable chaos and meticulously arranged structures, they have forged an unpredictable musical language with reinvention being the only constant characteristic of the duo. Featuring a large number of guests from Swamp Dogg to Justin Vernon of Bon Iver, their most recent album “Dimensional People” (2018) expresses itself as a dynamic 50-piece orchestra, telling a story in sound.

The third internationally renowned name in the lineup is the Danish rock band Iceage, who arrive in Narva two days ahead of their performance at the Tallinn Music Week festival in the capital of Estonia. While the terms punk, free jazz, decadent poetry and brooding glamour hint at their character, none sum up the band’s ethos better than Iggy Pop calling them “the only current punk band I can think of that sounds really dangerous”.

The main stage will also see performances by the Finnish urban and indie scene favourite Jesse Markin, a four-time winner at this year’s Estonian Music Awards Anna Kaneelina, and the Estonian funk squad Lexsoul Dancemachine, fresh off the release of their third full length “Lexplosion II”.

The cosy and bohemian Art Club Ro-Ro will see the Berlin-based Norwegian Bendik Giske transmuting his clubbing experiences with the breath, steel and muscle, tri-lingual Estonian indie rock collective Levski, and the young pop-rock group Pale Alison, representing the host city Narva, At the dance stage in the former cotton factory’s boathouse the new face on Estonian trap and hip-hop scene Manna will spread her silky lyrics and airy vocals. Additional performers and the whole festival programme will be announced during July and August. The festival starts on the morning of August 26 with the Business Day in the creative incubator OBJEKT located in Linda 2 centre. In the afternoon, BAZAR discussions will take place on the riverbank, followed by the main music programme. Guests are also welcome to take fun rides on yachts and small boats to Narva City Port and Port Narva-Jõesuu.

On Thursday, 27 August, the festival will also include free concerts and art events around the city, and the same evening a train from the Narva railway station will depart to the Tallinn Music Week festival in the Estonian capital.

Station Narva and TMW will be organised in line with the rules in place for public events at the time of the event, in order to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. The Station Narva music programme welcomes an audience of 1,500 people.
